For the past four months, I’ve been roasting my own coffee at home. It’s cheap, fairly easy, and has made for the perfect hobby. Last month I decided to step my game up and sell my coffee, coined Pop & Mill, at this Saturday’s Indie Mart, a monthly fair in San Francisco where local DIY vendors sell their goods. The week prior to Saturday was a whirlwind of late night roasting, last minute brand development, and sorting through the surprisingly demanding logistics of serving coffee without electricity in a 6’ x 6’ space. I had so much help from friends, and there’s no way any of this could have happened without them.
To put it simply, Indie Mart blew our minds. Not only did we completely sell out of coffee in about 4 hours, the reception was downright unexpected. The genuine excitement expressed by customers about Pop & Mill was something I had not expected. Aside from a constant short supply of hot water due to the lack of electricity, the day went nearly flawlessly. I honestly expected this to be a one-off event, and it feels pretty dang good to say “see you next month”.
A big thanks to my sister Kelly and my pal Mary for working the booth with me. You guys would have died for one of Kelly’s homemade biscotti. Also, thanks JP for the splendid logo design. Photos above by Max Hield.
Best day. So proud
